We each have a job in this process. Your job is to create your own individual objectives for being in therapy. Like a good coach, my job is to help you reach them. I have many tools to help you become more effective in dealing with your issue, whether it be emotions, relationships, or events. My goal is to help you make better adjustments and responses related to your area of difficulty without violating your core values or deeply held principles. All significant growth comes from dissatisfaction with the current status, or a striving to make things better.
Everything you do that takes a sustained effort is driven by two motivations: 1) to avoid pain 2) for the benefits gained. The major aim of therapy is increasing your knowledge about yourself and the patterns of interaction between you and others. Therapy becomes effective as you apply new knowledge to break ineffective patterns and develop better ones.
